So apparently today is International Men’s Day. This holiday was created to promote positive male role models, raise awareness about health and well-being issues more likely to affect men, and improve gender relations and promote gender equality.

 I am very grateful to have some excellent male friends and role models who I can trust in tough times and who trust me with their own issues and concerns. I try to show all of you guys how much I appreciate your friendship, though I know that can sometimes be awkward with the social standards of this day and age.

That said, I have always firmly believed that it should be more socially acceptable to compliment men. I think a lot of guys learn to keep their feelings on the inside, including when they really do want someone to reach out to them, and a lot of men do struggle with self-esteem and expectations of masculinity. It may sound backward of me, but I do think that this is a feminist stance because I believe in healthy gender equality and toxic standards of masculinity harm everyone. So, to various cool dudes in my life, I say, and encourage you to say to your friends or role models at some point today:

I believe in you
I’m proud of everything you’ve accomplished this year
You have an awesome, contagious laugh
I know you’re doing your best and it will pay off
You always know how to brighten your friends’ days

I respect your ability to listen and compromise when you realize your ideas didn’t work for everyone
